Birds in Guatemala: Discover Central America's Avian Paradise

Welcome to the Avian Heart of Central America

Guatemala, the northernmost country in Central America, is a true sanctuary for bird lovers. With its varied geography—from cloud forests and highland volcanoes to coastal lowlands and wetlands—Guatemala supports an astonishing diversity of birdlife. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a curious traveler, the birdwatching experiences here are nothing short of magical.

Geography & Ecosystems: The Foundation of Rich Biodiversity

Guatemala’s landscape is divided into three key ecological regions:

  • The Petén Lowlands – Located in the north, characterized by tropical flatlands on limestone substrate.

  • Central Highlands – A dramatic mountain range with volcanoes rising to 4,220 meters, offering cloud forests and pine-oak woodlands.

  • Southern Coastal Plains – Fertile, volcanic lowlands bordering the Pacific Ocean.

This topographical diversity is the backbone of Guatemala’s 766+ bird species.

Bird Species of Guatemala: A Birdwatcher's Dream

With 766 recorded bird species, Guatemala ranks among the most bird-rich countries in the region. Of these, at least 35 species are regionally restricted across southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

These species are concentrated in two Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs):

  • North Central American Pacific Slope

  • North Central American Highlands

Near-Endemic Birds of Guatemala

Five bird species are considered near-endemic, meaning they’re found almost exclusively in Guatemala and nearby Chiapas, Mexico:

  • Azure-rumped Tanager – Pacific slope forests

  • Horned Guan – Highland cloud forests

  • Belted Flycatcher

  • Pink-headed Warbler

  • Black-capped Siskin

These unique birds make Guatemala an essential stop on any serious birder’s bucket list.
